Sundarbans National Park reopens: West Bengal Sunderbans set to reopen from October 1

West Bengal has opened national parks, tiger reserves and wildlife sanctuaries for tourists, with appropriate security measures in place, after the state government announced the easing of restrictions on safaris and rides. According to reports, the state government has also decided to reopen the Sundarbans National Park from October 1 to tourists. All state gardens and parks were also allowed to open.

According to reports, the government of West Bengal announced the relaxations through a series of orders after reviewing the current COVID situation in the state.

As per the state government ordinance, all national parks, sanctuaries and tiger reserves located within the Sundarban Biosphere Reserve, as well as game drives and rides, if available, will be open from October 1. 2021. The government order also stated that Wardens of Divisional Wildlife / Forest officers will be allowed to impose restrictions and appropriate safety standards as they see fit. However, during the safari, all visitors are required to follow all safety protocols related to COVID, such as wearing face masks at all times, maintaining adequate social distancing, and consistently adhering to hygiene protocols. .

Debjit Dutta, president of the IATO West Bengal section, welcoming the decision, said he was grateful to the authorities for the decision. He added that there are nearly 70 forest and naturalist guides, 52 tourist boat operators and more than 52 hotels operating in Sundarban, and the livelihoods of host communities in the region depend heavily on tourism.

He further added that they were very happy to note that the other wildlife parks in the state had also been opened on the annual schedule.

The latest move is expected to likely attract more tourists to wildlife parks and forests, just before Durga Puja in West Bengal, and it will also bring much-needed relief to wildlife enthusiasts across the country.
