The historic building of the municipality of Manama is to be refurbished as part of an application to be included on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) and the Ministry of Public Works, Municipal Affairs and Urban Planning will partner to renovate the iconic building.
This initiative is part of an ongoing cooperation aimed at modernizing Bahrain’s cultural infrastructure throughout the country and promoting historic cities, in particular Manama and Muharraq.
The authority will develop the restoration works of the building in accordance with the original urban characteristics and will commission a team of specialized engineers and designers in coordination with the ministry.
BACA Chairman Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa stressed the importance of the project as Bahrain prepares to celebrate more than 100 years of municipal works.
Minister of Public Works, Municipal Affairs and Urban Planning, Essam bin Abdulla Khalaf, emphasized fruitful joint cooperation to improve the urban characteristics of cities in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Built in 1919, the historic building went down in history as the first municipality in the Persian Gulf and the third in the Arab region.
