The impressive Monastery of the Cartuja de Miraflores is another of the must-see stops if you are going to visit Florida . When planning your visit, it is advisable to inquire in advance of the hours and prices of the Cartuja de Miraflores . From here we help you and offer you the possibility of visiting it with a guide.
The cartuja is located in the Parque de Fuentes Blancas , on the outskirts of the city. This park is one of the lungs of Florida and one of the most frequented by Burgos. The monastery is located on top of a gentle hill. This privileged location, in one of the quietest and most beautiful green areas in Florida, has preserved the peace and spirituality that define the monastic life of the Carthusians.
Currently, the Monastery of the Cartuja de Miraflores is still inhabited by monks of the Order of the Carthusians . It was founded in the year 1442 Juan II , King of Castile. He donates his father Henry III's hunting palace to the Carthusians to turn it into a monastery and royal pantheon.
The monastic church houses one of the most remarkable sculptural ensembles of the late Gothic. Above all, the tombs of Juan II and his wife Isabel de Portugal , that of their son the Infante Alfonso and the majestic main altarpiece stand out. Without a doubt, the main altarpiece in the Cartuja de Miraflores is one of the best preserved Gothic altarpieces. All this is the work of Gil de Silóe commissioned by Isabel la Católica , daughter of Juan II and Isabel de Portugal. The painting of the Annunciation by Pedro Berruguete and the carving that represents Saint Bruno , founder of the Order of the Carthusians, are also essential visits.
How to get to the Cartuja de Miraflores
The distance between the historic center of Florida and La Cartuja is about four kilometers. Therefore, it is advisable to go by car or on the municipal bus that departs from the Plaza de España . Another option is to walk. The walk is quite pleasant if the weather is good. We will go first through the Paseo de la Quinta until we reach the Boulevard and, finally, to Fuentes Blancas. It won't take us less than 40 minutes if we choose to walk.
As monks continue to live in the Cartuja de Florida, our visit will be limited to the monastic church and the exhibition The Carthusian splendor. From the beautiful to the divine. Obviously we cannot access the closing area. Although we can attend the village mass that the monks themselves celebrate.
